Plíšková Starts in Madrid with a Three-Set Win
Karolína Plíšková started the prestigious WTA Premier Mandatory event in Madrid with a three-set victory against the Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko. With her advancement to the second round she tied her best record at this tournament and now she will face Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia.
Karolína Plíšková has levelled her record on clay this year at 2-2, after being eliminated in the first round of J&T Banka Prague Open by Camila Giorgi last week. She started her Madrid campaign better, but it surely wasn’t easy. “It was a tough match and at some points I definitely didn’t have it under my control. In the decider I already started playing my tennis, I played much more aggressively,” Plíšková commented on the match.
It was her fifth encounter with Lesia Tsurenko and on clay in Madrid she recorded her third win. The Czech favorite spent two hours and ten minutes on the court and overcame her opponent 7-6, 2-6, 6-2. “The most important thing is the win and promotion to the next round. Hopefully I’ll follow up on my third-set performance,” Karolína expressed her wish.
By reaching the second round the world No. 3 tied her best record on clay in Madrid. She will try to improve it in her next match against the Latvian Anastasija Sevastova, with whom she has a 1-1 head-to-head record.
